It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Institute of Maritime Studies (IMS). It is the privilege and aspiration of our institute to educate a new generation of aspiring engineers, lawyers and business people on the multifaceted discipline of Maritime Studies.
We offer the award of PGD and MSc in maritime studies. Our office is located at the University of Nigeria Enugu Campus (UNEC). Following our partnership with NIMASA, the Institute was approved in 2013/2014 but commenced regular academic teaching and research in the 2015/2016 academic session. We are approved to teach and award degrees in the following courses:
- Maritime Business and International Logistics
- Maritime Business Management
- Maritime Telecommunication
- Maritime Regulation Studies, Law and Policy
The maritime sector in Nigeria is an underutilized component of the country’s economy. The Institute of Maritime Studies at UNN is a vital initiative aimed at enhancing the nation’s capacity to leverage the vast opportunities within the global maritime industry. The Institute of Maritime Studies aims to play a pivotal role in facilitating access to skills and knowledge for individuals who seek to build careers in the maritime sector. Degrees and Diplomas offered by the Institute of Maritime Studies equip her graduates for employment and service in the public and private sectors. Graduates are specially equipped for jobs in such public sector areas as customs, immigration, the navy and security services, ministries of trade, commerce and industry, port authorities, shipbuilding and repairs, dock services, marine research institutes, and academia. Graduates should be readily employable in the private sector areas focused on maritime insurance, maritime law, shipping, port and dock services, maritime consultancies, and marine-related research companies, among others.
Our vision is to be the hallmark of Maritime Management, education and research in Africa and beyond, producing world-class Maritime specialists.
At IMS, UNEC we give our students a supportive environment to research and study contemporary issues that can be directly applied to our present economic, social and technological realities. Thereby growing their confidence to become versatile and knowledgeable in Maritime Studies.
