It is with great honour that I welcome you to the Institute of Maritime Studies (IMS) at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus (UNEC). Our institute is dedicated to educating a new generation of professionals in the multifaceted discipline of maritime studies, equipping them with the expertise to thrive as engineers, lawyers, and business leaders in this crucial sector.

The Institute offers both Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) and Master of Science (MSc) degrees in Maritime Studies. Since its approval in the 2013/2014 academic session, following our esteemed partnership with the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), our institute has endeavoured to play a significant role in maritime education in Nigeria. Regular academic teaching and research commenced in 2015/2016, and since then, we have been committed to providing high-quality education in the following areas:

• Maritime Business and International Logistics
• Maritime Business Management
• Maritime Telecommunications
• Maritime Regulation Studies, Law, and Policy

The maritime sector in Nigeria remains an underutilized component of the nation’s economy which brims with untapped potential. The Institute of Maritime Studies was established with the clear vision of enhancing Nigeria’s capacity to fully engage with and benefit from the global maritime industry. Our mission is to provide access to world-class maritime education and skills development for those seeking impactful careers in several  areas of the maritime industry.

Graduates of IMS are well-prepared for a wide range of employment opportunities in both the public and private sectors. In the public sector, our alumni find rewarding roles in customs, immigration, naval and security services, ministries of trade, commerce and industry, port authorities, shipbuilding and repairs, and marine research institutes. In the private sector, our graduates are sought after in areas such as maritime insurance, law, shipping, port and dock services, maritime consultancy, and marine-related research.

Our vision is to become the hallmark of maritime management, education, and research in Africa and beyond, producing world-class maritime specialists who will shape the future of the industry.
